Kitchen Backsplash!

So we really haven’t done much with the Cabin over this Summer, but we did get started on the wood stove project. We still have a bit more to do, but we’re hopeful we’ll finish the install by rainy season! First we got the platform planned out and installed in the living room.

Next we went down to the barn and sanded down the hand-me-down wood stove we got in a trade from the mother in law’s coworker a couple years ago. Then we prepped it for paint and painted! It turned out beautifully!

Next we will need to get the backing we chose installed (it hasn’t arrived yet!) and then we will haul the wood stove up to the Cabin and work on getting the stove pipe installed! Getting the wood stove into the Cabin will be a challenge, it is large and heavy.

The following week I decided to get going on the kitchen backsplash. I don’t typically work on the Cabin during the week after work, but I was getting all the supplies ready, picked up a few things at Home Depot, and decided to just run with the momentum! So Tuesday I started tiling and got almost through one wall, but got snagged on an outlet I didn’t want to keep Husband up with cutting tile to get around.

The next evening I was able to get around half of the next outlet before running into issues! The nippers I got (or my newly acquired skills) were not cutting it. So I needed Husband to use the scary grinder the following day to help me go further! So grateful he’s so skilled!!

The third evening I was able to get all the rest of the tile up (with Husband’s help cutting 4 tiles for the outlets, thank you!!) by 10:30pm. And it was Thursday. So I had the next day off!! I was so tired, I fell asleep immediately. But I was so excited I was up at 6 and working by 7…I just really wanted to see what it would look like with grout!

Wow does it look good with grout. Still need to do some trim (as with everywhere in the Cabin) but the drywall above the stovetop was in desperate need of protection, and we cook indoors far more in the Fall and Winter so I figured now was as good a time as any to get started! We’ve got odds and ends to finish all over, but I really love how our little Cabin is shaping up.

Apparently I hadn’t had enough work for the week because then I decided it was a great time to go out and work on resetting some of the rock wall around the garden. Moving rocks is hard work. So I’m spreading this project out as much as possible. Eventually I hope to have all the old overgrown walls dug out and reset, and then I need to build a few more around the new beds. We’ve got plenty of rocks to work with!
