This weekend was a productive one! However, not a ton of change can be felt/seen in the Cabin. I had a four day weekend – which was absolutely incredible – so we were able to start bright and early on Friday. We started with some chores by loading up the truck and trailer and taking a load off to the dump, dropping by the grocery store, and then heading off to pick up some dirt! Husband shoveled a whole yard of dirt into one of the beds where I planted a bunch of tulips for Spring, such an amazing man! Then we set to work on getting the upper cabinets installed. I didn’t think it would change the feel in the kitchen too much since the lowers already set the layout, but it really made a difference.
Okay, so yes, we still have the table saw in the kitchen, but even so, it’s really starting to feel and look like a kitchen now! We are still supposed to be getting the oven and microwave by this Friday, but I am a little worried as they haven’t updated to “shipping” yet. Keep us in your thoughts, I’m still hoping beyond hope we might have a kitchen by Thanksgiving!
Saturday we started early again, but really just did some dishes and chores before Husband went off for his weekly mountain biking adventure. I had to sit this one out, I crashed pretty good last weekend and injured my ribs. Hopefully this weekend I’ll be feeling up to it. Instead, I decided to take advantage of the time to myself and pulled all the dahlias! It was my first year doing dahlias, and somehow I ended up with 20 plants oops!
I took notes on all my plants and put them in paper bags with wood shavings and perlite. As it’s my first year and I have no experience yet, I’m just hoping they’ll all make it through the winter storage! These are a few of the tags I buried with the tubers when I planted, showing some of my favorite varieties. I’m glad I forwent mountain biking and got this project I’d been procrastinating on done, but digging and pulling all those plants still put a bit of a strain on my ribs. I had to work until dark to get it done!
Sunday morning we started early again because we still had a couple of projects we wanted to cross off the list. We headed out to Home Depot and picked up some supplies for our project of the day: front and back door steps! Now, we’ve been using a couple pieces of log from the Cabin wall we replaced for the front and back steps, and we didn’t really have much of a plan to replace them because eventually we would like to have a big deck. However, the front door step was a bit precarious and just a tad dangerous in the ever growing darkness of winter, and we’ve got countertops coming! This was an upgrade we weren’t eagerly awaiting or even really planning for, but improved our daily lives immensely. So great!
Then we went down to the barn and organized a bit and brought up our bins of kitchen items from literally years ago (four?) when we actually had a kitchen. We made space for the motorized toys to go back into the barn for winter storage. And then we relaxed for the evening! So even though we were busy all weekend, it was a lot of chores and winter prep. The progress we did make on the Cabin is amazing, and I am so hoping to see the kitchen make some more progress this weekend. Time will tell if our appliances arrive or not!
All the cold weather, darkness, foliage change, and winter prep has been getting me excited for the best time of year! Husband told me I’m not allowed to decorate until after Thanksgiving. And I tried. I really did try to wait. But…well…I just put up a couple of things to tide me over the next couple weeks! I can’t wait to dig out the decoration boxes!! The Cabin is going to be absolutely magical at Christmas time!
