Property Update

The plants on the property have been going crazy. We’ve had rainy gloomy days followed by hot sunny summer days over and over for quite a while now. I suppose that’s the best kind of Spring. I’m a big fan of summer. I’m not such a big fan of Spring. But since getting invested in the progress of so many plants I’ve really started to love Spring. Maybe my favorite seasons will be shifting with the property.

I found some bearded iris, though only one has any flowers/buds (and it’s got three!). And our peonies are getting ready to burst as well! My in-laws say “Pee-oh-nee”, but I always say, “pee-uh-nee”. It’s okay. We’re still friends. But I never know how to pronounce it now! You may recall the flowers I planted got eaten up one night. But it’s okay because I planted some more in a pot in the cold frame (for safety purposes!) and they’re starting to sprout!

I started the dahlia bulb quite a few weeks ago and it just spouted up a couple weeks ago. It’s growing beautifully now! I planted 3 others, but I’m not seeing any green yet so we’ll see how they do. I want buckets of big beautiful flowers to fill vases inside! And because I was getting so impatient, I picked up some lilies to plant as well! We stopped by our good family friends’ place last weekend and L had these amazing lilies blooming. It didn’t even occur to me to plant my favorite flower until then! I just had to get some after I saw hers. I didn’t grow these so I can’t take any credit for their beauty, but boy oh boy do I love looking at them!

I’m in love. I can’t wait until they’re older and bigger! Hopefully they take to the soil well! Now. To the good stuff. Check out this incredible, charming, handsome little garden shed my FIL is building. I’m pretty excited to see all the projects on our whiteboard, but I didn’t even know this one was happening until it started, and man is it awesome!

With the size of our (food) garden, and the amount of pretty little flower/bush beds we’ve got around, a garden shed is necessary! My in-laws have been putting a crazy amount of work into the garden and garden water as well! I’m so impressed with the outcome, and slightly sad I’ve been so focused on the Cabin that I wasn’t able to be a part of it. Check out all the fruits of their labors:

I’m not sure how many rain barrels there are, but there’s a lot. And since we already had our first dry well scare, we’re sure we’re going to need it! My FIL has been putting in hours and hours to ensure the garden will have enough water to feed it through the droughts of summer. It’ll get tested these next couple of weeks as we’ve got hot sunny days in the foreseeable forecast!

This week we also installed some screen doors to keep the bugs out and the little dog in. Our little Ollie is getting pretty old and he might be getting a little *shhh* senile. We’re pretty sure his eyesight is going, and his hearing may be as well. Regardless of what the cause is, the effect is he keeps wandering out into the property and getting lost (while still very close) and can’t hear us or see us trying to get his attention to herd him back home. And since there are eagles and hawks about, we’d rather we know where he’s at!

Okay, now to fill you in on the things I neglected to take pictures of last week. These are our little baby Christmas trees! They are looking HEALTHY! I’m so excited. I’ve never planted a tree before so I was pretty nervous about planting these. But they are doing better than I could have expected! I think they are supposed to be about 10 feet around and 20 feet high, but apparently that’s in 10 years…so stay tuned! 😉

Here is the Cabin with the come-alongs and the huge log to keep everything in place as we lift. We worked quite a few hours this weekend, but unfortunately it looks exactly the same. It was pretty defeating working for hours and not getting to see much (if any) progress. We had to redo almost all the bases for the jacks as we worked to get a tiny lift on the Cabin. Hopefully this weekend is better, but it’s also my birthday and a holiday…so we shall see!

Today I had quite a bit of homework to do. I may or may not have procrastinated early this week… but it was a gorgeous day out and I just couldn’t stomach staying inside for the day so I made a little outdoors homework area. It was pretty awesome. I was cursing my screen for the glare, but it was so worth it! Even the sunburn. Sunscreen girl. You’d think a girl of my complexion would have learned that by now. Guess not. We’ll try to get that lesson learnt this year! Also, here’s a pretty sunset, all the rocks I moved (by HAND! just kidding, I used the John Deere), the chickens enjoying some watermelon, and the second bearded iris bloom!

Have a great week, I’ll check back in again soon!
