One Month

We’ve officially had the girls for one month! They’re still currently in the brooder in the joint living space, and looking a little bit short on space. They are getting noisier and crazier, and they seem to get in little disagreements that cause a ruckus and a flurry of feathers – well – fluffs, the little pre-feather feathers. I think we’re all excited to get them moved outside where they can stretch their legs and wings and be as noisy and rambunctious as they like! This week I took pictures of each of them perched on my hand. All except Gladys who decided she would rather attempt flight than hang out long enough for a picture to be snapped. And she’s the biggest of the girls so it’s a pretty big event for all of them when she decides she needs to start sprinting and jump flying around with excitement!

We’re getting very close to letting the chicks outside, my father-in-law put a ton of work into getting the coop ready this week. He used mostly salvaged wood, but had to get some plywood for the siding. And he used all old paint we’ve had from previous projects. It’s turned out beautifully. He was able to finish getting it all constructed and primed earlier in the week, and then got it all painted and finished up before Sunday.

On Sunday we had a nice little BBQ with some family friends and were able to get them to help us move the behemoth of a coop out to where the chicks will be living. The men started the move on their own, but in the end it took all 7 of us as one of the legs got caught on the one uphill and forced the wrong way with a lot of weight behind it. It’ll need to be repaired. All in all it was a fairly successful move. Now we just need to get some chicken wire up and we’ll be able to set the girls free in their new upgraded suite!

Today they’ve been exceptionally quiet compared to their new normal, and when I poked my head in to get a couple of quick pictures they stayed relatively calm (they always get excited and start running at me thinking I’ll give them some treats!). I was able to get a couple pictures of the group, but Edith rushed in to steal the show quick as a whip. Picture one: she’s closest to the camera, bottom right. Picture two: she’s at the very back already gunning for the front. Picture three: she’s hogging the lime light (per usual). If my phone hadn’t been more interesting, she’d probably have instantly hopped up on my hand. Little diva.
