When we decided that we were going to get a property with my In-Laws, it went like this: my idea was a farm with every kind of animal imaginable and a beautiful home and little kids running around with grandma and grandpa a quick walk down (or up) the driveway. I’m pretty sure my Mother-in-Law’s idea was fairly similar with a beautiful garden and of course a little farm stand down at the road (as this is one of her retirement dreams). I believe my Father-in-Law’s was also somewhat similar, but with an amazing wood shop and relatives to take care of the animals. My husband’s idea was slightly different: lots of land to ride dirt-bikes and four-wheelers and make mountain bike trails and jumps galore! Thankfully, we are all pretty flexible people and are prepared to embrace and support each others goals and dreams.
The first animal addition to our Homestead little hobby farm: CHICKS!
I will provide weekly updates on the chicks, and share their names once they have them! It was pretty comical going to get the chicks at the farm store. I walked in and checked out what they had available – I’ve been inquiring with anyone who has or has had chicks, but I know NOTHING. So I walk in, and I know I want at least one of a certain kind, but I’m pretty open to anything for all the others, and I was told variety is fun which I am inclined to agree with. And then the cashier asked if I was purchasing some chicks and was ready to ring me up for, “which kind would you like?”. I’m sure I looked like a deer in the headlights and said something like, “well, one of each, and whatever else I might need…” and started to walk about to see if I could figure out what that might include. I’m something of a jump in kind of girl, so naturally I went to get the chicks with just about zero know-how other than, “we’re going to try raising chicks this year”. The girl at the counter was super sweet, she came out and walked me around and showed me everything I would need to get started and told me what she uses and why and still included information on all the other products so I could decide what would be best for us. Thank goodness for good people!
The start of another adventure at the Homestead – I can’t wait until garden season starts, another first for me! (though my Mother-in-Law is a seasoned pro!)
