Weekend Three

This weekend I got scheduled to work on a Sunday instead of a Saturday, and it ended up working out beautifully. We worked on the Cabin on Saturday and on Sunday morning, winter arrived. It’s already February, but we haven’t had barely a dusting of snow so far. This Sunday, however, it snowed all day long, then it froze over night and we’ve gotten to keep our small amount of snow for 3, going on 4 days now! As much as I love the snow, I’m glad we got our work done on Saturday so we didn’t have to brave the weather!
A few weeks back when I was working, my old boss’s wife – well, still current boss technically, but I don’t get to work with them anymore since leaving the office and going back to school – anyways, she brought me this awesome piece for the Homestead. I can’t wait for the Cabin to be ready to receive it! I hung it up in the Honey House for the time being because I couldn’t bring myself to store it until the Cabin is ready. It’s just too perfect!

So Saturday we got to work on the Cabin, our goal being to finish getting the downstairs log walls all bare, and removing the rest of the interior walls. When we started, we had to remove the wall that divided the children’s room from the tiny stairway entry room, and finish clearing the layers off the North and East walls. The East wall was half way cleared and the North wall hadn’t yet been touched.

We started with the North wall on the West side and worked our way toward the East. For some reason, the West half of the North wall appeared to be painted white underneath everything. And while we haven’t been able to remove most of it, I believe it may actually be newspapers. I was able to pull off a couple of sections and to my delight, one of them had a date on it! It’s the first newspaper we’ve found with the date listed. “Bellingham, Wash., Friday, May 26, 1905.” SO COOL. I’m hoping we’ll be able to find more, my plan is to frame the cool newspapers and display them in the finished Cabin.

As we reached the interior wall that divided the children’s room from the other side, we just kept moving. I kept clearing everything away as Husband kept ripping everything down. It was really fun to watch the final wall go away and the space to open up.

It still feels like it’s going to be a pretty small space, but I’m confident it will all be functional, usable space & rather spacious after RV living. Small enough to be cozy, large enough to not feel cramped. The final work we did was pull down the rest of the shiplap that covered the North and East walls. Then we had to clean up and clear everything out so that next weekend when we get started on the upstairs we’ve got space to move. It’s so exciting to watch this project unfold.

Gotta add a few more snow pictures šŸ™‚ I wish we had gotten enough to cover everything! The wind storm blew away a lot 😦
