We will be working hard to bring this beauty back to life for the foreseeable future, and we’re excited to share the journey with you! “We” – myself, my husband, and my in-laws (his parents) are currently living on the homestead. The in-laws have a trailer and we have an RV, and together we turned the shop, or the “Honey House”, into a temporary joint living space while we work on getting a permanent living space available. It’s going to be quite the journey!
After years of searching for a chunk of land that we could transform into our very own paradise, we found this beauty. As of September 4, 2018 we are the proud new owners of an old rundown homestead. On 28 acres, it has a cabin built in the 1890’s, an old barn built in the 70’s (or so we’ve been told..who knows? It’s pretty rough), a tiny 12’x12′ two story building with a cement cellar and small storage room up top, and a small shop. We purchased the property with my in-laws and are looking forward to the years of bringing the homestead back to life. Our plan is to renovate the old cabin for ourselves, help the in-laws construct a new home for themselves, and slowly integrate the old pioneer ways into our new (old) homestead! Lucky for us, my father-in-law is a carpenter by trade (and nearly retired!!). But, as I am in school full time, my husband is working 1.5 jobs, and my mother-in-law is in the middle of a big merger at her own job, it’s going to be a slow process, regardless, we couldn’t be more excited! I mean look at this place!

The view (from the barn) that sold me!

The south wall of the shop needed to be replaced due to bees, so it was affectionately deemed the “Honey House”. It took a good weekend to replace the wall, and another to switch out the swinging barn doors for a solid wall with a window. I was astonished at how quickly construction can go! I’ve never been involved in a project like this, and I was so excited to be a part of all the progress (and impressed by the speed and instant gratification!), though I’m sure not all of this process is going to be quite so instantly gratifying.
The next step was to get ourselves a temporary joint living space where we could stretch and lounge outside of the trailer & RV. It took awhile, and it’s a bit rough around the edges, but we were able to move up the week before Christmas and spend our holiday in the new space! And while I love having some extra space after living in the RV for the last 2+ years, we are super eager to start work on the Cabin! Stay tuned to see the slow (and steady!) progress.
